What is mohair?

Mohair is a natural fibre spun from the hair of the Angora goat. It has a soft sheen and takes colour beautifully, which is why many makers save it for their collector bears.

Mohair is a natural fibre spun from the hair of the Angora goat. (The Angora rabbit gives a different fibre, angora wool.) For teddy bears the yarn is woven into a fabric with a raised pile, so the fur stands up much like a real coat.

Why makers choose it

  • Lustre: the fibre has a natural sheen that catches the light.
  • Colour: it takes dye well, so colours come out deep and even.
  • Resilience: it is springy and hard-wearing, and tends to keep its shape through years of cuddles.
  • Character: the pile can be left long and straight, curled, or brushed to look well loved, so two mohair bears can look and feel quite different.

Mohair is counted among the luxury fibres, alongside cashmere and silk, and it usually costs more than sheep's wool. That is one reason it is mostly found on collector bears.
