What is Steiff's "button in ear"? (draft)

The left ear and the 1904 trademark are well known but not from the cited page: do you have a Steiff page for them?

Steiff mark their teddies with a metal button in the left ear, a trademark since 1904. The tag under the button tells what kind of piece it is: red lettering for limited editions, blue for open editions and black for replicas.

On vintage Steiff teddies, the button and the tag also help to date the teddy, because their designs changed over the decades. When a vintage teddy still has its button, ear tag or chest tag, its product page says so.
